I'm tired of people telling me what a saint I am for teaching in the public school system. I'm not! I teach for entirely selfish reasons. I get paid to read. I get paid to hassle teenagers--so much fun. I get paid to take my summers off. I get paid to yell. I get paid to grade papers during staff development seminars. I get paid to stimulate creativity. I get paid to encourage thought. I get paid to find things out. I get paid to do new things every day. I get paid to do something that is good and necessary--teach my darling, lazy, maddening, curious students to read and write competently. I never have to wonder if what I do makes a difference. I never have to rationalize my career. I am NEVER bored. I teach because I love it.
